What’s normal as a complete beginner?

What’s been your experience seeing beginners or being a complete beginner?

I have very little flexibility (desk job), little athleticism (never done sports), and did some minor weight lifting and running a few years ago. I can’t even run half a mile without being winded.

I’ve been looking for something that can get me out of the house, motivated to get in shape, learn a new skill and be structured. I went to a local gym and it seemed to check every box. I signed up for a 3 month pass because I figured by 3 months I should at least understand something and if nothing else be in better shape.

The first 6 classes have been extremely disheartening. I can barely move right, my footwork is so sloppy, my hip and core engagement is non-existent. My kicks are pathetic, I can barely hit the lower 4th of the bag and the form is god awful. During these beginner classes we’re focused on the basics, learn a few techniques, but some classes there is light sparring where I’m barely even able to orient myself and just take hits.

I can’t tell if my experience is normal or completely abysmal. In my head I’m thinking I still give it the 3 months to see if there’s any improvement, but at the same time I am the newest and pretty much the only person there that’s new. Despite the negativity, this has probably been the best thing to get me out of my house, force myself to combat my anxiety, and has helped me keep my sobriety for the last 2 weeks, so there’s positives it’s just I clearly suck and the partners don’t like me lol.
