Muay Thai for People with knee osteoarthritis?

This post was originally published on this site.

In my 20’s, had acl knee surgery in high school. Learned that the graft is ruptured and arthritis has progressed to a high grade in all sides of the knee. Surgeon wants to go in again but these procedures just accelerate the degradation and provide a few years of relief in the meantime, if even that.

The non-surgical knee carried the weight for years and now also has arthritis.

I wanted to start self defense and martial arts classes to rebuild hand eye coordination and build confidence (i find my adrenaline spike and i begin to shake even during minor stresses ever since the surgery and not being able to play in high intensity environments like sports etc.). Doing high intensity, people-facing activities like badminton, soccer, hockey, or in this case martial arts would help get this all back.

Was going to start muay thai until this new knee info came this month… is it still a wise idea? If not, what else should I look to? I think boxing has even more knee pivoting?

Thanks!
