Muay Thai Coach Assaults Me During Light Sparring

This post was originally published on this site.

I was excited to find a new Muay Thai gym in my area. The coach seemed chill a software programmer who just ran the gym as a hobby after leaving a coaching job at a bigger, more renowned gym. He seemed like a friendly guy. Over the next couple of months, there were a few red flags moments where he’d get unreasonably angry and lash out. I shrugged it off, wanting to believe in the best.

Then, during what was supposed to be a light sparring session, everything changed. He told me to throw a kick, reminding me to use “balance and control.” I threw a second kick, and that’s when he snapped. He went into a frenzy, throwing multiple hard kicks to my thigh and punches to my head. I fell to the mat in agony.

He stood over me, yelling that I’d kicked him too hard, even though he had blocked it with no issue. The assault left me unable to walk for nearly a week, with blue and purple bruises all over my thigh and hand.

I’m done. I haven’t gone back, and I’ve given up on the sport I loved because of this one traumatic experience. It’s hard to believe this happened during a supposed training session.

What do you all think? How do you spot a dangerous coach, and what’s the appropriate response when they cross a line like this?
